Rhino dehorning and trimming 2022, done and dusted. It has been eight gruelling and emotional days as we started the operation of dehorning and trimming the Pilanesberg rhinos for the second time. Yes, we know this is not the solution and it was an emotional rollercoaster for all involved. It also does not mean all other efforts to protect rhinos falls away – all the anti-poaching efforts in place remain the same. However, as we move towards finding the silver bullet that will halt poaching of rhinos, park management remains committed to doing everything in their power to halt the onslaught of rhino poaching.
The Rhino Protection Unit remain out there in the field to keep rhinos safe, and training and equipping of the RPU continues.. The Bat Hawk and other measures all still play a major roll. I am not at liberty to discuss the various security measures in place, nor the statistics. This is only to advise the visitors and lovers of the gem that the rhinos have been dehorned. No rhinos were injured or died during this entire operation, and no carcasses were found either.
No persons were harmed. We are eternally grateful for the manner in which the operation proceeded and the professional handling of all aspects by the relevant people assisting. No one in this team would be doing this operation if it was not felt to be urgent and necessary. If you have ideas to assist and think they have not been tried yet rather email your thoughts or suggestions to park management.
