Lion Conservation in Pilanesberg
When animals are fenced, and especially in the case of predators where there is not an abundance of them, it is important to manage their numbers and genetics. The predators in the Park are monitored and information is kept on which lions are mating with which lionesses. If not managed the males could breed with their offspring. As part of this, Park Management monitors lion populations to ensure that there is no in-breeding occurring. Should this be the case, the decision will be made to relocate and bring in new lions to allow for the continuation of genetic diversity.
The PWT supports this initiative through funding and raising awareness. Part of the funding is also used to fit lions with radio tracking collars to allow for easier monitoring of individuals and their prides.
