Happy World Environment Day – 5 June
Thank you Jacky Baloyi from Conservation Kids, Sun City’s Mr Lwasi Mswelanto, Mankwe Game Trackers represented by Ms Phumeza Ndjock and the Pilanesberg Wildlife Trust for making this educational experience with the Grade 10 learners of a local school, Sedibelo Secondary School in Moruleng, possible. The more we inform the youth the more prepared they will hopefully be. The morning was crisp and cold with mist on Mankwe dam as we headed out to meet Jacky and the pupils. A very shy bunch of students soon warmed and became more vocal as the experience progressed. The young rhino was notched and dehorned by the team. For management identification purposes rhino are notched and DNA collected on these operations. Due to the ongoing poaching of rhinos in Africa, our rhino are all dehorned as an added safety measure for their safekeeping. Our Rhino Protection Units and all other measures I won’t mention here are all still in place as well. Thank you to Pilanesberg Management, Pilot Jaco Jacobs of Heligame and Vet Dr Ean van den Berg of Eco Vet from Thabazimbi for joining us and making this event possible ahead of World Environment Day.
