Botsalano…. At first it was thought the Rhino was possibly shot as she was unable to move. Her young calf remained diligently at her side though. Vet Gerhardus Scheepers was called in to assess and the wounds were from a bull Rhino attempting to mate with her! He had done too much damage for her to even move again. The difficult decision was made to euthanase her to put her out of the pain she was in. It is always a difficult decision and all possibilities are considered before euthanasia.

The young male calf was moved to the Rhino Orphanage to protect him as he is too young still to be on his own.
Though we are happy this is not a poaching incident, we are saddened that this Rhino had to suffer so much. Sadly Rhino do not help their own plight. In nature male Rhino will dominate the female to mate. She will only mate with a male that is stronger than herself. Even to her detriment and her death.
