And so the wildfires start in Pilanesberg National Park… This one started near Malatse Dam and the fire teams were there till late yesterday with Steve, Charlotte, and our pilot Jordan. Thanks Craig Hunter for calling it in. Overnight the fire has gone out in some areas but still burning in others this morning. The team will get there though Charlotte and Steve are out there already as well as some of our rangers. The Bathawk with pilot Jordan is getting an aerial view (thanks Zoologisk Have) to check for any animals, fire spread and any other issues. This is really a huge help as a helicopter would cost us over R10 000.00/ hour! Please report any fires you see. Some are planned but others like this are not. They are not necessarily arson but do come from outside the park when neighbours burn their litter or leaves for example. There was also a fire on the Kwa Maritane side yesterday and the Park Rangers along with Working on Fire (WOF) attended to that fire as well. Thank you to everyone for their efforts out there. The more we do now the less damage there is when it’s a lot hotter, windier, and drier.
