Visitors to parks of the North-West Parks and Tourism Board are informed that we are currently in the critical period of the fire season in the NW Province. We have seen day temperatures in the middle to high 30’s, together with very dry conditions and some days very strong winds. All of these are very good conditions for the quick spreading of veld fires. Visitors are therefore informed that NO OPEN FIRES will be allowed at any place in the parks, including picnic areas. In terms of Section 5 of the National Veld Fire Act [No. 101 of 1998], “when the Minister has published a warning in terms of subsection (1)(b), no person may light, use or maintain a fire in the open air in the region where the fire danger is high or extreme”. Since the NWPTB experienced serious fires in parks last year, park staff will be very diligent in enforcing this rule this year. Visitors are advised to use gas braaiers in the designated areas. Visitors are also requested to report any fires or potential high-risk situations to park staff please. This ‘No fire’ policy will be enforced until climate conditions improve or the first significant rain has fallen. Thank you for your cooperation.
