This update is not to draw criticism or rude remarks. It is due to the negative comments of our teams on social media platforms that we hesitate to inform or update. Poaching is very demoralising, stressful and heartbreaking in itself, without the damaging and negative remarks from the public. So please refrain from any negativity. Just know that we are doing all we can with what resources we have in Pilanesberg.
Having said that, we do want you to know what is happening as we all care and love this place and it’s beautiful wildlife so much. In 2019 Pilanesberg lost 16 Rhino compared to 35 and 33 in 2017 and 2018 respectively. We’re hoping the decrease of 2019 is due to the Rhino Protection Unit’s efforts. It could also be due to less Rhino avail on the ground. There is no way to measure 100%.
The Pilanesberg RPU remains as committed as ever in their protection of Rhinos, and all other species in Pilanesberg. We applaud them and thank them for their efforts and want them to know they have the support of the public for what they do to keep our wildlife safe.
Please note:
Three Rhino poaching suspects are appearing in the Mogwase Magistrate’s court today, through most of this week. The trial will continue into next week. These 3 suspects were caught almost 2 years ago for Rhino poaching in Pilanesberg. You are welcome to attend and show your support against the scourge of Rhino poaching. Thank you for caring!
