The young Rhino had an injury which was noticed before the Vet got there. Once the Rhino was darted and immobilised, Vet, Dr. Johan Cronje, could see the large gash on the Rhino’s (named Joey) rump.
After close investigation it was determined that the wound could have been made by another Rhino! These creatures do not seem to understand their own vulnerability.
Dr Cronje could fit his entire hand into the wound. Inside he found a broken off piece of hip bone. He took it out (there was nothing else to be done) and explained that Joey would survive without it luckily.
