Sadly we lost a Rhino cow to poachers on Thursday night. She was a known Rhino that always brought her babies out to meet visitors to the park. Many of you know this calf as the happy little girl that ran up and down one of the main roads. To say we are devastated is an understatement. The mom was dehorned as are all the Rhino in the park.
Forensics have been and we will wait to hear on any progress. The RPU team was out for over 12 hours but no poacher was caught unfortunately.
We fail to understand why people do horrific murders like this. It baffles our minds and it destroys our compassion for humans. As the mom was known to us we knew she had a calf. We are happy to report that Annie, as she was named, was found in really good condition (with a broken heart no doubt). Annie has been captured and relocated to The Rhino Orphanage where she will be in the best hands for her childhood. Once she grows up we will return her to the wild as per norm. The Rhino Orphanage raises all our orphaned babies.
Feel free to sponsor Annie with them as the Rhino Orphanage does not charge us for any costs. Thank you to Dr Gerhardus Scheepers and Pilot Nico Jacobs for the swift response to rescue Annie. To all the RPU, and other teams on the ground, we thank you for your dedication and passion. We must never give up! All the park visitors that stopped and spoke to us and offered words of comfort, thank you. Please note that we are all disturbed by this. Everyone works to prevent this from happening. Our methods are not public and our reasons are not public for obvious reasons. If you have any really meaningful contribution please email park management.
