Rain our amazing Cheetah, was released into the park in April 2014. Her first litter of cubs in Pilanesberg was born in Jan 2015. When Rain was introduced into Pilanesberg National Park there was no record of her age. Rain was captured after she was found roaming on farms close to Madikwe. The farm she came from belonged to a farmer named Riaan, so in order to name this beautiful cheetah after him, there was a play of letters and she was named Rain. After Riaan. Who realized the importance of this cheetah to the population growth and made sure she went to the right organization. Rain has proven to be an amazing mother and has added to the meta- population of cheetahs worldwide in a massive way. Now, 9 years after her release, we find her more compromised than ever with an injury to her foot/leg. The park management is consulting with our vet Dr Gerhardus Scheepers as to the way forward. We do not know Ram’s exact age and no one wants to risk losing her by doing what may seem necessary to some. Obviously everyone is concerned. Thank you, Park management as much as the general public. The call as to how Rain needs to be treated will be left to the vet to advise. He is the expert and has the qualifications to go with this. Rain is under observation and everything possible will be done for her. This is never in question.
