Update:
We went out to check the fire and though it was still contained, it was very intense with hot and windy conditions. Steve was concerned the intensity would create a windstorm or wind ‘devils’. A fire line was walked with support at hand to increase the distance between the fire and area that needed to be protected. If this wildfire jumped the road it was approaching, there would be no stopping it. The resources are limited, and the conditions are too intense.
The line was successful, though hectic at the time. Steve and Clinton were both almost engulfed in the smoke and the heat as the fire came close and needed to be hosed. Fortunately, it was successfully managed and the distance of the safety zone was increased. Our pilots Lené and Emile for tracking the fire from the air and establishing the start point. Thank you, you two. Thanks to everyone who assisted in making this fire safe. Our RPU guys, the WOF guys that assisted, as well as Clinton Calitz again, and the HO’s there on site. Thank you to Shepherds Tree Lodge for the water and cold drinks. They were much needed out there today.
A wildfire can into Pilanesberg National Park yesterday afternoon on the western boundary close to Shepherds Tree. Teams spent 8 hours keeping it at bay, and the fire was under control at all times. We will head in now to follow up. Our pilots are also taking a fly over for better visual over the area. Thank you to all that assisted. It was tough but it had to be done. Thank you, Clinton Calitz from Predator World, for being first on the scene and doing all you can! You are amazing. Thank you to our staff for the great effort. Thanks Dylan and Gill from Bakubung for coming to assist, and for the water and drinks. Thank you Lené and Emile for getting supplies for the work. Thank you to the Honorary Officers for your assistance as well. Much appreciated.
