In the last couple of days Pilanesberg National Park has been capturing giraffe in the Day Visitor Area (Manyane) to move them to the greater Park area. The giraffe on the Day Visitor Area (DVA) side of Pilanesberg are there by accident. These giraffe have all fallen over the fence from the Park side over the past few years. 9 giraffe in total have to be moved. The reason for moving them back is mostly because they fight on the park fence with other giraffe on the greater Park side. The Park can’t risk fence damage because of the risk of other animals leaving the Park too.
I must admit that moving rhino or any other species is a darn lot easier that giraffe. These must be the most awkward and challenging animals to maneuver! Nonetheless no animals died or were injured during the operation.
The Vet DrGerhardus Scheepers also confirmed that 2 of the females are pregnant. Yay! Thanks to all that assisted with the capture. The capture team with Riaan van Rensburg ran their butts off. Thanks Dr Gerhardus Scheepers and assistant Cornel Eksteen for the professionalism and care. Thanks Pilot Azél Crous of BassAir for the competent flying!
