Fire season is back in force. With winter approaching and the definite chance of wildfires in Pilanesberg one has to be ahead of the game as much as possible. If you are traveling around the park and you see a fire please do report it.
In order to prevent wildfires from getting out of control, the park management takes preventative measure in the form of fire breaks and spot fires in areas they deem a threat to the park or particular area. If the veld is left to mid-winter to do planned burns then the fires are more intense as the bush is more dry. Intense fires are more destructive, burning through trees as well as the intended grass. When and how to burn is calculated by the wind direction, wind speed, and dew point. The last two evenings we have been out there managing a couple of areas and testing the veld dryness.
