We have all been a little concerned about this little ellie who is quite bloated… And like you we do not want to see any animal suffering! I have contacted a couple of vets regarding the baby and the conclusion is that the condition needs surgical attention. However we cannot interfere without causing the little one a lot of stress and really upsetting the entire herd.

For those that do not know how elephant herds are structured, they move as one, and should we immobilize the little one to attend to it, the others will simply not leave. So we would have to immobilize the entire herd, which is definitely not going to happen for obvious reasons.

Please keep me posted on the baby if you see it and we will monitor it that way. Perhaps it pulls through and surprises us all. Thank you Jann-Rick Louw for the beautiful video. The baby comes up at the end…
