This month saw the annual Pilanesberg game counts take place. Game counts involve flying over different areas of the park in a designated pattern, and counting each individual animal of a particular species, or how many individuals of various species that are seen on each sweep. This helps management monitor the various populations within the park, ensuring that the balance of the ecosystem is maintained. Each count takes four days, and three counts are conducted in total (total of 12 days).

It’s tough, much as it sounds like fun, focus has to be on the strip being counted, and your focus must contend with the wind buffeting your face, eyes and ears all the time. It is amazing nonetheless as they see parts of the park unseen by most! The valleys, gorges, and heights out there are stupendous. Park management will  hopefully release the figures soon. Thank you for your patience and sorry if any sightings were disturbed!
