A rather unsure start to today’s notching. The weather was closed in, and we were not sure that we would get the helicopter with MG in it there. After a couple of coffees and Pilanesberg Centre, waiting for the clouds to lift, it was all stations go. A Rhino cow and her calf were identified. Darts went in without issue, and the Rhino’s were immobilised.

The Mazda Group then had their opportunity for a hands on experience with the Rhino cow and calf close up.
They named the calf Francine and the mom Yvonne. As you may be aware, Rhino Notchings are part of Rhino management in Pilanesberg and Madikwe. Rhino’s are notched and DNA’d to identify them on the ground and also to take DNA material from them for use in Rhino poaching cases where necessary.

Many thanks to Kawango and Mazda France for making this possible today. Thank you to all the park visitors that co-operated with us on the ground. Thank you to our team. Sorry to miss Stephen and Nico on this one!
